With fall leaves covering the ground, many have changed their thoughts from autumn to Christmas shopping. Instead of joining the madness that will be prevalent at the malls and chain stores this weekend why not make the choice to shop local. Although many local shops have already had their holiday open houses, to many, Friday officially marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Thanksgiving weekend will also feature “Small Business Saturday” on November 26th, where local merchants will open their doors and offer a variety of specials they hope will attract local shoppers.
The McNairy County Chamber of Commerce has spent the last several months promoting their #SHOPMCNAIRY campaign by promoting a variety of shop local contests. From social media photo contests and Where’s Waldo contests, to the current campaign Spend to Win, the chamber has worked diligently to promote local spending in the county’s small businesses. The Spend to Win contest, which will reward the shopper that spends the most locally with $1,000, began October 5th and will end December 5th.
Local small businesses are owned by people who live here, work here, and are invested in this community. Small business owners create more jobs locally, offer greater loyalty to their employees, and in most sectors provide better wages and benefits than chain stores do. When you shop locally the tax dollars go back into the county to help fund fire, police, roads, schools, etc. That is why the chamber hopes residents will be just as committed to local business owners as they have been to the community.
“Local merchants have gone out on a limb to provide a service to the county in their own unique way, the best compliment a resident of McNairy County can give these entrepreneurs is their business,” said McNairy County Chamber of Commerce Public Relations Director Katie Weatherford. “Whether that means heading down to a local cafe on Saturday morning for some delicious pancakes or swinging by a local boutique for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers, when you shop local, you’re benefiting the local economy.” Weatherford added that local shoppers should take advantage of the uniqueness that local businesses offer. “I think the Fashion Show is a perfect example of what sets us apart as a community,” stated Weatherford. “You will have a hard time finding boutique clothing in a box store that is as stylish and up to trend as our McNairy County stores.”
Weatherford said she understands a lot of local residents will leave the county on Black Friday, but that she hopes they will be committed to supporting local businesses on Saturday. “I think if we’re being honest we all enjoy the hustle and bustle of Black Friday, but we should get up and get out on Small Business Saturday,” Weatherford said. “Teamwork makes the dream work and I really want to show these dreamers my support on Saturday.”
Shoppers that wish to participate in the Spend to Win contest must bring their receipts to the chamber office in Selmer for verification by the December 5th deadline. For more information about the Spend to Win contest or other chamber programs visit www.mcnairy.com.
